In the laboratory of the Institute for Protection and Ecology of the Republic of Srpska, Banja Luka, a three-day capacity building training for laboratory monitoring of persistent organic pollutants was completed, as part of the UNDP BiH and POPs project. The training was organized from February 12 to 14, 2024, at the laboratory of the Institute for Protection and Ecology of the Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka.

The implementation of this component of the POPs project aims to support the Institute for Protection and Ecology of the Republic of Srpska, Banja Luka, and the Federal Institute for Agropedology in:
– Professional training of staff,
– Identification of necessary equipment, and
– Supervision of sampling and analysis of POPs.

So far, successful trainings on soil, water, and air quality sampling have been completed, and the last cycle includes sampling of air emissions for PCDD/F and PCBs at the chimney.

The project “Environmentally Sound Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Industrial and Hazardous Waste Sector in BiH” is funded by the Swedish Embassy in Sarajevo and implemented by UNDP BiH.

The goal of the POPs project is to reduce risks to human health and the environment by preventing the occurrence of unintentionally released POPs (U-POPs), transitioning to chemicals that do not contain POP substances in the industry, and environmentally sound disposal of at least 50 tons of waste containing POPs.
