INSTITUTE REPRESENTATIVES PARTICIPATED IN THE PRESENTATION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL HOTSPOTS MAP OF BiH

Representatives of the Institute for Protection and Ecology of the Republic of Srpska participated on 09th September 2026 at the UN House in Sarajevo in the presentation of the Map of Environmental Hotspots in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The event was organized with the participation of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The Map represents a digital tool for the systematization and spatial analysis of data on potentially burdened and degraded sites. The analysis covered 117 sites, of which 48 were identified as priorities for further assessment, including landfills, industrial and mining sites, former military complexes, and other areas with a potential impact on the environment.

The Map does not represent a final assessment of the degree of contamination, but rather a basis for further field investigations, site characterization, risk assessment, and defining priorities for future remediation and management measures.

The development of this tool, with the support of Sweden and co-financing from the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism, represents a significant step towards consolidating data, improving expert assessments, and making decisions based on relevant data in the field of environmental protection.
